Spencer’s Run, the Waveny Park Dog run is open. The ‘best’ news of the year is a change, almost undetected by visitors. Large stones have been pressed into the ‘new’ grass areas, providing traction and drainage. Continue Reading »

Is this a $250,000 joke? A band of aging volunteers intends to lift tons of concrete and asphalt debris and sort through thousands of yards of dredged mud, weeds and rubbish?
The truth won’t come from the glamorous journalism of the New Canaan Advertiser, nor from the politicians who approved the immolation of the cornfield area.

Citing a news article in the April 9th New Canaan Advertiser titled: “Community group forms to restore portion of Waveny Park”
A public-private group formed recently with the intention of restoring the Waveny Park cornfields.
Is public-private a word? Or is it two antonyms, such as good-bad, put together?
The cornfields, some 18 acres located in the southeast corner of the park, have been neglected for years, leaving it overgrown with invasive plants and vines that are choking native species of trees and bushes, many of which were planted 50 years ago or more.
I know newspaper journalists like to ‘editorialize’ but to say the fields have been neglected is an outright falsehood. Continue Reading »

As administrator of Waveny.net I receive comments and questions via the contact form. Recently, I’ve been ‘talking’ with a few other New Canaan resident about the Town of New Canaan’s eagerness to sell off Waveny land for a cheap buck. In addition, their excitement at the idea of turning public land into pay-per-admission land.
The initial proposal of the CCRC to build on Waveny property cited the low cost of Waveny land relative to privately owned property nearby and the Town cited the income from the sale of our heritage as reason in favor. Since I’m not sleeping in the same bed, I’m overwhelmed with a discouraging air of disappointment.
When there are 75 extremely wealthy people living directly under falling fireworks debris what will become of 10,000 people’s Family Fourth? Continue Reading »

New Canaan’s Town Park formerly known as Waveny Park will, soon enough, cease to exist as ideas for new construction continue despite the inescapable signs of overdevelopment and pollution.
Four Bells!!! The alarms have been sounding for years; The woodlands are dwindling. Animals are absent. With increased traffic to new facilities and deficient parking, “progress” has even encroached upon the playing fields.
Selfish, short-sighted, unconscionable…Obsequious, servile, mindless: These are the words to fit into a sentence descriptive of the state of affairs.
ATTENTION ALL: Please stop considering the last 100 acres in New Canaan’s public park for your building projects. The “park” is not a building lot.
If you would like to build anything in New Canaan, please feel free to purchase from the copious amount of property for sale.
The next article is going to be titled: “Whenever I read the Advertiser I feel like throwing up.”
The article after that is going to be titled: “Abandoning Home; How you make me want to move out of New Canaan”

Is there Gold in Waveny? Walking the trails of Waveny, there’s a new sight on the ground and it looks like gold! Taking it upon themselves to make the woods a better place, New Canaan has paved the forest. Is there gold in New Canaan’s public park? No, but there sure are a lot of dividing lines.

There’s a lot of garbage in Waveny these days. From piles of construction debris to tires to common roadside litter. Never before, in the long history of the Lapham Estate, has the property degraded more in one year than it had in 2008. Under the guise of beneficial development we have turned walking trails into paved roadways, turned fields once abundant with flowers, grasses and wildlife into toxic wastelands and altered the woodland to accommodate an endless convoy of diesel spewing dumptrucks and machinery. Since there is nothing any one of us can do to stop ‘progress’ from devouring our extremely limited and, now more than ever, quickly fleeting resources, i.e., Nature, I have come to a sense of desolation and exasperation. So be it. I give up. Who cares what we leave for our children? At least we can look back at the archives of this website and show them pictures of a time when animals had a habitat and Nature lovers could walk along thin dirt covered trails through the woods without standing to the side while a giant dumptruck blast by…

Spencer’s Run dog park news:
Look out Rowayton! With news that Spencer’s Run in Waveny Park would be closing until Spring, visitors to New Canaan’s dog park were asking directions to nearby runs that don’t have the pathetic requirements New Canaan’s ‘public’ dog park faces. Rowayton’s bland run seems to be popular with Cranbury Park’s open woodland in Norwalk, CT a close second.
