Spencer’s Run
Oct 10th, 2008 by admin
The Waveny Park for dogs, Spencer’s Run is a fenced-in social hangout for canines of all sizes. The Waveny dog park was opened in 2006 and features several fenced acres on a grassy hillside where dogs and people can walk, play, meet, greet and enjoy the idyllic settings Waveny Park affords it’s visitors.
Remember to put on the collar with your pet’s current New Canaan dog license and rabies vaccine tags, both are required in this park. Official dog park rules can be found on the spencersrun.org website.

Would it be that expensive to install temporary fencing around the new seeded area to protect the new grass and still allow use the the remaining area?
A fence was installed twice in the past to protect new seed. The fence required maintenance but it seemed to have worked.
I agree that is a better solution than locking the whole place up since the only grass that is “threatened” is the new grass. The hillside has yet show signs of wear.
Hi. Does anyone have information on where, online, I can get updates on Spencers’ Run’s openings and closings? We come a bit of a distance and the dog area seems to be closed, rain or shine, every time we get there. Thanks!
WS Ball,

The way it reads, it’s closed for a year. I have to travel a bit to get to Waveny also but have always found it worth the ride. I grew up in N.C. and consider it home. It’s a real shame they have closed the park indefinitely. My lawn isn’t growing right now, thank goodness or I’d have to mow it all winter. I wonder what they are expecting from the new grass during the cold months.
Regarding the goal of maintaining grass under the flat treed area just inside park gates, I wonder if given the poor drainage and limited sunshine and heavy usage, if a synthetic product like astro turf would be a viable investment and help reduce park closings. Anyone care to respond and talk it up?
I visit the Waveny dog park on a regular basis. The park opened just as we got a new puppy and has been a wonderful social part of our day.
I like Ken’s idea of putting up a fence around the newly seeded area better than the reality of Astro-turf. The idea of installing artificial grass is so funny that we haven’t stopped laughing since reading it.
At my construction office, we’ve used the Spencer’s Run project as an example that lends credibility to the exhaustive research we put in before beginning new construction. As a builder we work diligently with our knowledge base to consider the appropriateness of materials and their application as well as a fundamental understanding of the importance of a strong “foundation”.
If you use wood glue on your coffee mug it will look great until you put it to use.
This issue with the grass is a matter of perspective.
For the people that care whether there is grass underfoot, it’s a patience game. For the people, like myself, who would like to go there to exercise our dog the only problem is the closure of the facility. Either way it’s frustrating to have such a resource and not be allowed to use it.
I’m with Ken on this one too. Let’s put the fence back up and let us in, please! My dog is getting fat and bored.
In fact, since it’s going to be an entire year why not install a fence cutting the current run in 1/2. We could enter through the lower entrance for the next year. This way you could let the half with hard compacted fill grow wild for a year. I’ll build the fence myself if you promise we can go there everyday for a year.
Shees. When is the park gonna re-open? I used to bring my dog there, but I cant waste my time to drive when it is closed. Plus the popel in charge of the run should post when it closes and opens so no one else wastes there time like I used to do.

I love the dog park and go there all of the time. Lately I have seen many people bring their young toddlers and not pay attention to them and start to socialize with other folks there. People should hold on to their toddlers or not bring them in because this is the one place dogs can run with each other. It is not for young children whose parents bring them in to watch the dogs. Parents with young toddlers should sit on a bench with them or don’t come at all or hold them in their arms. It is irresponsible of people to bring their toddlers to the dog park and not watch them. Responsible parents who do bring their children stay outside the fence and show the children the many different kinds of dogs.
Hi, hope everyone is doing well..
I agree Rosie!! I was in the park one day and there was a couple of lady’s with children. My dog was playing, any time my dog or who he was playing with made a fun friendly growl, these women were were rude, getting loud etc.
The dogs were just playing. And, ready for this?? They didn’t even have a dog!!! Another time, not so long ago, a little kidlet was run into by a dog, I’m serious, he had to be thrown at least five feet. It’s only a matter of time!!
Thanks so much everyone..
Love the Park.. Thank you!!!!!
