CCRC, no more Family Fourth
April 13, 2009 by admin
As administrator of Waveny.net I receive comments and questions via the contact form. Recently, I’ve been ‘talking’ with a few other New Canaan resident about the Town of New Canaan’s eagerness to sell off Waveny land for a cheap buck. In addition, their excitement at the idea of turning public land into pay-per-admission land.
The initial proposal of the CCRC to build on Waveny property cited the low cost of Waveny land relative to privately owned property nearby and the Town cited the income from the sale of our heritage as reason in favor. Since I’m not sleeping in the same bed, I’m overwhelmed with a discouraging air of disappointment.
When there are 75 extremely wealthy people living directly under falling fireworks debris what will become of 10,000 people’s Family Fourth?

Other contact submissions I have received included a most interesting proposal for a privately funded trust to outbid the CCRC. The email offered an amount equivalent to several million dollars per acre from only two trustees. Imagine if the town allowed people who would rather see forest forever to outbid those that want to pave and charge admission to a select few.
I would be willing to donate to such a conservation land trust.
While i agree with your over issue of the desecration of Waveny Park … you are way off base on many of your facts … for example, where did you come up with the “75 people” with the CCRC? They are talking 200-250 units (mostly holding 2 people in each).
The dog park stinks (literally and figuratively) from all the feces and urine that soak down into the soil … and the promise in writing for approval of that spot was that the stockade fence would be masked with bushes so we civilians would not have to look at that eyesore … now denial on that front even though $10,000+ was spent on the kiosk entry way and $1000 was spent on a dog costume for Doug Newton.
Also, if you are so with it, why don’t you have a write up about the recent P&R Commission’s and Board of Selectmen’s approval of two more large light poles and lights for the football playing fields in the parks?
Finally, who are you? You make everyone else give out their name and email address. Why not you … not brave enuf?
Thank you George, It’s good to hear from someone with some knowledge and an opinion.
Interesting to hear that our town is willing to sell land deeded all the residents so 400 extremely wealthy people can live inside our public park.
75 affecting 10,000… seemed a fair point-making ratio. I am not sure how many Family Fourth permits the town sells but I know people come from far away to see the best show around, making it unlikely that only 10,000 people care whether Waveny has a fireworks display. There is no question the debris will fall directly on the proposed site.
Urine is soaking into the grass? Off base might be a statement that an open field stinks when 95% of the feces are picked up by ‘civilians’ and urine which has soaked into the ground differs from standing pools of liquid that gather at the composting piles of manure where the CCRC wants to live…?
I don’t make anyone do anything. Please fill in anything you wish in the text fields, the person before you is named “mad about closing” – Do you suggest I made someone write that in the text field?

Thank you for taking the time to comment on Waveny.net. You opinion is most valuable.
If I were to provide commentary on every issue, such as lighting, pesticides, researching astro-turf, etc… there wouldn’t be time for photographs of the beautiful landscape.
Waveny Park is enjoyed by many organizations, groups, sports, activities and people of varying concern. The N.C. Advertiser doesn’t report everything that happens in New Canaan.
